Unless your loaded with money or are willing to go off the beaten track and explore (which seeing as it's an open world RPG you should be) to find your gear you will spend a large number of your gaming hours doing this. I personally scavenged and robbed the hapless corpses of those I had butchered to get my gear and as a more sneaky assassin-esque type character I didn't have a huge focus on smithing, the issue now is that as I face tougher opponents I need to get better armour that most enemies would not drop. So I eventually gave in and took up the hammer and anvil.
Now there are two ways to cheaply grind up your smithing, through iron daggers and leather bracers. It may just be me but I find that the bracers work best.
